Beaumont’s script is mainly based upon Lovecraft’s short novel The Case of Charles Dexter Ward, but it holds also debts with Poe, Stevenson and yet another work by Lovecraft, The Dunwich Horror.
Corman makes a movie more ambitious than the ones he had done before, but the result still lacks something. It’s rather good, but with a little less speech and more monsters it would have been better
